History of Woodhall Spa
Woodhall Spa’s story begins with an accident of industry that turned into a Victorian wellness boom. In the early 19th century, local entrepreneurs sank deep shafts in search of coal, only to strike mineral-rich water instead. Investigations into these underground springs (including a major shaft begun in the 1820s) helped reveal the distinctive, iodine- and bromine-bearing waters that would make the area famous.
The settlement we now know as Woodhall Spa was effectively “born” in the 1830s, after a spring discovered in 1823 gained a reputation for healing properties. The first spa baths appeared around 1829–30, and more substantial baths and hotel facilities followed in the late 1830s, helping the village develop from a rural hamlet into a purposeful resort.
The arrival of the railway in 1855 accelerated everything: visitors could travel in far greater numbers, and Woodhall Spa grew into a genteel destination of pine woods, landscaped grounds, lodging houses and leisure. By the late 19th century, promoters even dreamed of it as a “Lincolnshire Buxton,” reflecting ambitions to rival the country’s best-known spa towns.
In the early 20th century, Woodhall Spa added lasting cultural landmarks. The Kinema in the Woods opened as a pavilion cinema in 1922 and remains a celebrated part of village life today.
The Second World War brought a different kind of history: nearby RAF Woodhall Spa became closely associated with 617 Squadron, and the Petwood Hotel served as the officers’ mess. The village’s Dambusters Memorial in Royal Square continues to commemorate those who served and died.
