The Kinema in the Woods is a much-loved historic cinema tucked away among the trees on Coronation Road in Woodhall Spa. First opened as a cinema in 1922, it is famous for being the only fully functioning cinema in the UK that still uses back projection, giving film screenings a uniquely nostalgic feel.
Originally a sports and entertainment pavilion, the building has gradually evolved into a multi-screen venue while keeping its old-fashioned charm. Today there are four indoor auditoriums plus a seasonal outdoor screen, showing a mix of the latest releases, family favourites and special events.
Screen One houses the Compton Kinestra organ, installed in 1987, and visitors can often enjoy live organ performances during the interval – a highlight for many regulars and visitors alike. The Kinema is a privately owned family business, open every day except Christmas Day, and is also available for private hire, parties and special screenings.
Whether you’re on holiday locally or live in the village, a trip to the Kinema in the Woods offers a cosy, characterful alternative to the multiplex – complete with comfortable seating, traditional snacks and a warm welcome.
